The Alkylation Unit is used to react light olefins from the FCCU with isobutane to make a high  octane gasoline blend stock. Concentrated sulfuric acid is the catalyst. In order to avoid  undesirable side reactions a large excess of isobutane is required. The majority of the Alkylation  Unit feed is mixed butenes. The unit can also co-process limited amounts of propylene and  amylenes. There are four main sections in the unit, reaction section, refrigeration section,  effluent treating section and the fractionation section.
